This week’s issue includes details on how the Chinese Communist Party’s hostage diplomacy eventually forced the United States and Canada to concede on its demands to release the CFO of Huawei.  While Beijing’s arbitrary detention of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig likely caused the collapse of Canadian public opinion on China, the Party likely learned the lesson that hostage taking works.  The U.S. Justice Department has a stronger case against Huawei given their CFO’s admissions, but it remains to be seen whether the United States can impose more cost on the company than it already is.

Additionally, the collapse of China Evergrande continues to loom with unknown implications on the Chinese economy, the Global economy and the Party’s geostrategic goals.
