Islamism and Immigration in Europe

Tuesday, September 17, 2024

Many European societies are facing large-scale immigration especially from Muslim-majority countries. The perception of failed integration policies, clear evidence of radicalization in immigrant communities, and terrorist attacks motivated by Islamism have fueled the rise of right-wing populist parties, which have destabilized the political landscapes in countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands. Meanwhile some left-wing parties, in France and the United Kingdom, have undermined their own historical commitment to progressive values by endorsing the misogyny and antisemitism imported from the Muslim world. These developments are producing conflicts within the European Union as well as nascent tensions in the trans-Atlantic partnership with the US.
