The Chiang Ching-kuo Presidential Library was officially dedicated on January 22, 2022, on the site of the late Taiwan president’s former residence in Dazhi, Taipei City. President Tsai Ing-wen, former president Ma Ying-jeou, members of the Chiang family, and over two hundred high officials, scholars, and diplomatic representatives attended the opening ceremony. Eric Wakin, deputy director of the Hoover Institution and director of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, was invited to deliver his congratulatory remarks at the event. “I am pleased to be here to witness the founding of Taiwan’s first presidential library,” Wakin said. “I give my sincere wishes to the future success of both the library and the cultural park as living historical monuments and the center for scholarly research."
The opening ceremony was followed by a tour of its exhibition on Chiang Ching-kuo’s historical legacy. The exhibition was developed in partnership with the Hoover Institution Library & Archives and co-curated by Hoover Research Fellow and Curator of the Modern China Collection Hsiao-ting Lin. It showcases photo images and excerpts from Chiang’s personal diaries, now stored at Hoover. President Tsai said she hoped the new library will provide information that allows Taiwanese society to have a deeper understanding and a fairer evaluation of Chiang and the nation’s history, helping to resolve differences in historical memories among the people of Taiwan.
