Hoover fellows are famous as generators of ideas, but they’re just as active in getting their insights into the hands of leaders in policy, business, and public opinion. Among Hoover’s range of programs for making those connections is the Leadership Forum, which brings influential members of the policy, business, and international community to Hoover for a 360-degree primer on the policy challenges and solutions at the top of Hoover fellows’ minds.
Fellows take the lead in identifying high-value forum participants—established or rising leaders in their field—who in turn have an opportunity for a candid, off-the-record discussion with Hoover’s top policy experts. Notable past participants include House Speaker Paul Ryan, Governors Scott Walker and Mike Huckabee, and Senator Rand Paul. Most recently, Hoover hosted Mitch Daniels, Purdue University president and former Indiana governor.
Before his two-terms as governor, Daniels served as a senior adviser to President Ronald Reagan, as director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, and as chief of staff to Senator Richard Lugar. As governor, Daniels worked to improve the performance of state government, and he’s carried his reform-minded approach with him to Purdue. One of his major projects at the university is the Purdue Moves Initiative aimed at overcoming challenges in higher education to position the university as a leader in college accessibility, STEM programs, research activity, and student experiences. His discussion at Hoover focused on higher education, as well as health care and the federal budget, and included some of Hoover’s most outstanding thinkers.
