A unique Latvian collection has been added to the holdings of the Hoover Institution Archives consisting of more than a hundred items: underground leftist publications, pamphlets, leaflets, calendars, manuals, and ephemeral periodicals. The materials complement very well Hoover library and archival collections on pre–World War II Latvia. The collection covers the following main periods and topics, most of which are very poorly represented in academic libraries: publications of the 1917–19 turmoil in Latvia, underground leftist publications produced in Latvia or in the Soviet Union by the Communist International and directed against the Latvian government, brochures and periodicals from the first years of Soviet occupation, and selected Latvian émigré imprints. The collection was put together and organized by Ainars Ikstens, Riga art historian and bibliophile. A detailed list of contents accompanies the collection.
