Hoover Library & Archives Workshop on Political Economy

    PLEASE NOTE: In preparation for a significant construction and renovation project that will prepare the Hoover Institution for its second century of activities, the Library & Archives reading rooms will be closed to researchers from December 24, 2018, to the early months of 2020. During this period, our collections and our public services will be unavailable, but our collecting, exhibition program, and other activities will continue. Further information will be available on our website during the fall of 2018. Please email bronweyn@stanford.edu with your fellowship inquiries.

    All applicants are required to submit their applications online with the following:

    • One page CV

    • A proposal of fewer than 750 words describing your research project, including the names of Hoover collections you plan to use and why they are necessary for your project

    • Names and contact information for two academic references familiar with your research (no formal letter required)

    The Hoover Institution Library & Archives are pleased to accept applications for participation in the 2018 Hoover Archives Summer Workshop on Political Economy, beginning December 01, 2017.

    The Workshop will be held at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, from June 25-June 29, 2018. It brings together an interdisciplinary slate of scholars who are using the collections of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives to study political economy, broadly defined. A wide range of research is suitable for this program, but participants must utilize the extensive holdings of the Hoover Library & Archives. Past participants have included historians, economists, sociologists, and political scientists.  Scholars from any field who would benefit from immersion in the archives are welcome.  Applicants must be holders of the PhD or scholars with a commensurate publication record, or be advanced graduate students.

    Steven Teles, associate professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University and 2018 Hoover Library & Archives Summer Workshop keynote speaker.

    This year’s keynote presentation will be given by Steve Teles, associate professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University and author of The Rise of the Conservative Legal Movement: The Battle for Control of the Law.

    Participating scholars are expected to have an active research program and to spend each day working in the Hoover Library & Archives. They will attend a daily group lunch, two group dinners, a keynote address by a visiting scholar, and make an informal lunchtime presentation on their research.

    If admitted to the workshop, scholars will be provided with a $2500 honorarium, intended to cover lodging and transportation.  Alternative compensation will be arranged for international participants who do not hold a US Social Security or TIN number. Please note, international participants are subjected up to 37% tax on all payments.

    Applicants are encouraged to read about the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 workshops to learn more about the research topics and approaches that are suited to the workshop.

    Bruce Caldwell Delivers Keynote Address On Hayek For Library & Archives Workshop On Political Economy

    On Friday, June 24, the second annual Hoover Institution Library & Archives Workshop on Political Economy hosted a public lecture by renowned scholar Bruce Caldwell, professor of economics at Duke University and director of Duke's Center for the History of Political Economy. Caldwell is the author of Beyond Positivism: Economic Methodology in the 20th Century, and for the past two decades his research has focused on the writings of Austrian Nobel Prize-winning economist and social theorist Friedrich Hayek, whose papers are housed at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives.

    Inventory of the F. A. Harper Papers Available Online

    Floyd Arthur “Baldy” Harper was an American educator and economist whose ideas influenced libertarian thought. The F. A. Harper papers, which relate to laissez-faire economics and economic policy in the United States, now have an inventory available online.

    Milton Friedman Sound Recordings Digitized

    More than two hundred fifty audiotapes in the Milton Friedman papers are available for listening after having been digitized by Hoover's audio lab. The earliest, recorded in 1961, captures a debate between Friedman and Senator Joseph Clark on the proper role of the federal government in which Friedman frames his argument around a critique of John F. Kennedy's inaugural address.

    Some of the last remaining papers of the economist and Nobel laureate Friedrich von Hayek (1899–1992) arrived at the Hoover Institution Archives in May.
