Overview

A considerable portion of the Taiwan collections are from the Chinese Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT), and KMT officials active between the 1970s and 2000s, when democratization and economic development policies were shaped. Also available are campaign materials of the Democratic Progressive Party, in power from 2000 to 2008, and English-language materials by and about Westerners and foreign entities who engaged with Taiwan around VJ Day.

Curator Hsiao-ting Lin Honored For Recent Publications On Modern China

This month Hoover Library & Archives congratulates Dr. Hsiao-ting Lin, Curator for Modern China, whose book Accidental State: Chiang Kai-shek, the United States, and the Making of Taiwan (Harvard University Press, 2016) received the 2017 Kingstone Award for Most Influential Book of the Year in Taiwan.

Hoover Fellow And Library & Archives Curator Hsiao-ting Lin Publishes A New View Of Modern Taiwan

This March Hsiao-ting Lin, Hoover fellow and curator of East Asia Collections at the Library & Archives, will release his book Accidental State: Chiang Kai-shek, the United States, and the Making of Taiwan, the product of years of research in Hoover Archives. Published by Harvard University Press, Lin’s book draws from sixteen collections at Hoover related to the history of Taiwan and US operations in East Asia.

Hoover Holds Annual Summer Workshop On Modern China

The third annual Hoover Institution Workshop on Modern China, entitled “China and Its Neighbors: What History Can Tell Policy Makers,” was held during August 3-7, 2015. This year the workshop featured five speakers from the United States and Japan who evaluated the rise of China and assessed China’s impact on neighboring states’ policy planning.

Legislative Delegation from Taiwan Visits Hoover

A bipartisan Taiwanese legislative delegation visited Hoover on Friday, July 12, 2013, as part of a diplomatic tour of the United States. The delegation included legislators Lin Yu-fang, Chen Tan-sun, Chan Kai-chin, and Wang Yu-min and officials from Taiwan’s foreign and defense ministries. Accompanied by Bruce Fuh, director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, the delegation met and exchanged views on US-Taiwan relations with Hoover fellows.

Taiwanese foreign minister Lin visits Hoover

Yung-le Lin, Taiwanese foreign minister, and Bruce J.D. Linghu, director of the Department of North American Affairs for the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry, visited the Hoover Institution on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, as part of their daylong visit to the San Francisco Bay area. Minister Lin, who has served in the ministry for more than three decades, has represented Taiwan in missions all over the world.

Hoover Opens Papers of Kuomintang Leader

The Hoover Institution Library and Archives recently acquired the personal papers of Wang Sheng (1917–2006), best known for his relationship with Chiang Ching-kuo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek and president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) between 1978 and 1988.

Hoover Acquires Papers of Taiwanese Independent Movement Leader

The Hoover Institution Library and Archives have recently acquired the personal papers of Tian Chaoming (1918–2010), a Japanese-educated physician well known for his efforts in promoting Taiwan’s democracy, human rights, and political independence. Among the materials Hoover has acquired are Tian’s manuscripts, his correspondence with political prisoners, and more than three hundred photos documenting anti-KMT political movements in the 1980s and the 1990s.

Taiwanese vice foreign minister Lyushun Shen visits Hoover

Taiwanese vice foreign minister Lyushun Shen visited the Hoover Institution on April 15, 2011, accompanied by Mr. Jack Chiang, director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in San Francisco, and Ms. Li-fang Huang, a director at TECO. Hsiao-Ting Lin, research fellow and curator of the East Asian Collection at the Hoover Institution Library and Archives, gave the visitors a tour of the new exhibit A Century of Change: China 1911–2011.

Shen Keqin Papers Available at Hoover Archives

The papers of Shen Keqin (1921– ), former Republic of China representative to Thailand (1975–89) and director of the Executive Yuan (1989–90), are now available for research at the Hoover Institution Archives.
