The rare publications and archival materials assembled by government officials, diplomats, military personnel, businessmen, missionaries, journalists, scholars, and private individuals chronicle social, economic, and political conditions in Asian countries. While maintaining the library and archives’ strength in documenting Asia’s transformations in the late nineteenth to twentieth centuries, our collecting efforts also focus on contemporary affairs.

For decades after his defeat by the Chinese Communists in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek relied heavily and almost exclusively on the United States to defend and consolidate his island redoubt, Taiwan, against the communist invasion. Under the facade of an ostensibly formidable US-Taiwan alliance during the cold war, however, Chiang would, from time to time, turn to his erstwhile enemies in World War II for military advice.
Yung-le Lin, Taiwanese foreign minister, and Bruce J.D. Linghu, director of the Department of North American Affairs for the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry, visited the Hoover Institution on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, as part of their daylong visit to the San Francisco Bay area. Minister Lin, who has served in the ministry for more than three decades, has represented Taiwan in missions all over the world.
Joseph Stilwell began his diary in the early 1900s and kept it up, to a greater or lesser extent, until his death in 1946. Now those decades of diaries, including observations on his travels through China, Japan, and the Philippines before World War II, are available on the Hoover Archives website. They supplement Stilwell’s World War II diaries, transcriptions of which Hoover has offered online since 2005. All are part of the Joseph W. Stilwell papers at Hoover.
The Hoover Institution Library and Archives recently acquired the personal papers of Wang Sheng (1917–2006), best known for his relationship with Chiang Ching-kuo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek and president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) between 1978 and 1988.
The Hoover Summer Workshop on China and Russia hosted a talk and discussion on the Chinese Gulag under Mao by Klaus Mühlhahn. Mühlhahn is a professor of Chinese history and culture at the Free University of Berlin who specializes in modern Chinese legal history. His Criminal Justice in China (Harvard University Press, 2009) won the American Historical Association’s Fairbank Prize and his PhD students are regular visitors to the Hoover Archive’s China collections.
The Hoover Institution Library and Archives have recently acquired the personal papers of Tian Chaoming (1918–2010), a Japanese-educated physician well known for his efforts in promoting Taiwan’s democracy, human rights, and political independence. Among the materials Hoover has acquired are Tian’s manuscripts, his correspondence with political prisoners, and more than three hundred photos documenting anti-KMT political movements in the 1980s and the 1990s.

The Hoover Institution Library and Archives have recently acquired more than two hundred pieces of historical materials relating to the Chinese Cultural Revolution, a sociopolitical movement that took place in the People's Republic of China from 1966 through 1976. Set into motion by Mao Zedong, then chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, its goal was to enforce socialism by removing capitalist, traditional, and cultural elements from Chinese society and to impose Maoist orthodoxy within the party. This increment, which augments an earlier collection of Hoover’s Chinese Communist Party records contains nearly two hundred issues of the Red Guard “little newspapers” between 1967 and 1971 and other communist pamphlets, internal party documents, booklets, serial issues, and published speeches of communist leaders during this period.
Prince Andre Lobanov-Rostovsky was a specialist on Russo-Asian relations and a professor of Russian history at the University of Michigan and the University of California at Los Angeles. Several years ago his papers were donated to the Hoover Archives; that gift has now been followed by his library. Among the interesting and rare books received is a set of publications of the Russian Orthodox Mission in Peking (Beijing).
