About

Susie Miller Carello was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Carello’s passion is to ensure all children and their families can chose demonstrably amazing classrooms, and to champion teachers and the education necessary to build successful lives. In her twelve years as chief of the Charter Schools Institute of the State University of New York (SUNY), SUNY-authorized charter schools across New York tripled from 72 to 221, ultimately serving 120,000 children, 83 percent of whom New York State identified as economically disadvantaged. Among students in SUNY-authorized charter schools, 91 percent outperformed students in their districts of location in mathematics and 88 percent in English language arts. The institute received national and international awards for its work in creating an environment where great schools of choice take root and thrive.

Serving as vice president for research and evaluation at the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA), Carello founded the first research division and led NACSA's research, evaluation, and accountability initiatives, designing NACSA’s first national data project on authorizer practices and authoring the association’s first “State of Charter School Authorizing” report. Carello is also the former associate commissioner of education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Carello has served as a visiting lecturer at Columbia University and Butler University, was an Edward Meade Fellow at Harvard, and was vice president of the Modern Red Schoolhouse at the Hudson Institute. A proud native Hoosier, Susie was a founding staff member at Indian Creek Discovery Science and Technology Magnet School in Indianapolis, a national blue-ribbon award winner, and received Indiana’s Excellence in Education Award.
