Commander Justin Matejka, national security affairs fellow at the Hoover Institution for the 2024–25 academic year, is an afloat officer who has conducted search-and-rescue, counterdrug, maritime migrant interdiction, and defense operations across the Western and Eastern Hemispheres over a nineteen-year career. He recently served as the Coast Guard’s liaison to the US Senate.

Representing nine years of sea time, Matejka’s operational assignments have included five afloat assignments, two tours in command, with service in South Florida, in Mississippi, and for the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. In staff roles, Matejka served as a watch stander at the Rescue Coordination Center in Miami, as liaison to the Joint Task Force–National Capital Region, and as liaison to the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands.

A native of Florida, Matejka graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and earned a master’s in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.
