The Yale Johnson Center for the Study of American Diplomacy hosts Remembering Charles Hill, 1936-2021 on May 6 and 7, 2021.
The virtual sessions will feature personal reflections from Dr. Henry Kissinger, along with other distinguished diplomats, professors, and Charlie’s former students. You can view the full program agenda and register for the interactive Zoom sessions May 6th and May 7th.
The conference will open at 4:00 p.m. EST on Thursday afternoon, May 6, with a session featuring Dr. Kissinger and moderated by John Gaddis, Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History and co-founder of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy.
On Friday, May 7, there will be three panel discussions examining Charlie’s significant impact through his government service (9:00 to 10:15 a.m.); teaching through International Security Studies, Grand Strategy, and the Humanities at Yale (10:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.); and mentoring students (1:30 to 2:45 p.m.).
As a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Charlie represented his nation across three continents and served as a senior advisor to leading figures in modern diplomacy, including former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, as well as United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. After retiring from public service, he devoted nearly three decades to teaching at Yale, where he was Diplomat-in-Residence in International Security Studies, Brady-Johnson Distinguished Fellow in Grand Strategy, and a fixture in Yale’s Program in Directed Studies.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Professor Norma Thompson, Associate Director of Yale’s Whitney Humanities Center and Senior Lecturer in the Humanities; his daughter Catharine L. Smith of Washington D.C.; and his grandchildren Christopher N. and Laura C. Van Lieu. He was predeceased by his daughter, Emily C. Hill Van Lieu.
