Governor Scott Walker, the 45th Governor of Wisconsin, joined Hoover fellows for a Leadership Forum roundtable at the Hoover Institution on Wednesday, September 4. The thoughtful exchange allowed the Governor to discuss how government reform—such as healthcare reform, public assistance reform, public pension reform, and education reform—can work to move people from government dependence to independence. Attending Hoover fellows included those with specialties in political science, taxation, fiscal, and economic policy, health care policy, and education policy.
First elected in 2010, Governor Scott Walker’s reforms have eliminated the state's $3.6 billion budget deficit without raising taxes and gave school districts and local governments the tools needed to balance their budgets. In June 2012, Walker became the first governor in American history to win a recall election.
Wednesday’s roundtable was part of the Hoover Institution’s Leadership Forum program, which seeks to engage influential policy leaders with the Institution, its scholars, and its supporters. This past year the Leadership Forum has hosted Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, former World Bank President, Robert Zoellick, former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, and Mayor Chuck Reed of San Jose, among others.
