Taiwan, a robust democracy, has achieved international recognition for its remarkably successful response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Chen Chien-jen, Vice President of Taiwan (ROC), discusses the factors that have contributed to this success, and Taiwan’s efforts to engage with the international community to share its experiences and alleviate shortages of medical supplies.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Chen Chien-jen, Vice President of Taiwan (ROC), is a Johns Hopkins-trained epidemiologist, who has played leading roles in Taiwan’s public health system as an educator and policy maker. After serving as Dean of the College of Public Health (1999-2002) at National Taiwan University, in 2003 he was appointed Minister of Health, where he directed Taiwan’s response to the SARS crisis, and laid foundations for disease control that would prove vital to its response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Chen is a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, was Cutter Lecturer on Preventive Medicine at Harvard University (2008), and received the Knowledge for the World Award from Johns Hopkins University in 2012.
