In the January 16, 2016, Taiwan presidential and legislative elections, the Democratic Progressive Party inflicted a devastating defeat on the incumbent Kuomintang. As a result, Taiwan politics will likely undergo massive changes in the years ahead. Realizing the economic and social changes that President-elect Tsai Ing-wen has promised will also be extremely challenging. Overlaying and seriously affecting all of these efforts will be the dynamic of cross-Strait relations.
