About

Mark Koyama is a Hoover Institution National Fellow for 2017–2018.  He is an associate professor of economics at George Mason University and senior scholar at the Mercatus Center.  Professor Koyama received his D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 2010. His area of expertise is economic history.  In particular, he is interested in the institutional foundations of modern states.   He has published numerous articles in economics and economic history.  Currently he is completing a book with Noel Johnson entitled The Birth of Religious Freedom: Liberalism, Rule of Law and State Development, 1100–1800, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2018.
