Patrick J. Kenney, a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, is executive vice provost at Arizona State University, where he is also a Foundation Professor in the School of Politics and Global Studies. Kenney is the coauthor, with Kim Fridkin, of five books, most recently Choices in a Chaotic Campaign: Understanding Citizens’ Decisions in the 2020 Election (Cambridge University Press, 2024).

Previous books include The Spectacle of U.S. Senate Campaigns (Princeton University Press, 1999), No Holds Barred: Negativity in U.S. Senate Campaigns (Prentice Hall, 2004), The Changing Face of Representation (University of Michigan Press, 2014), and Taking Aim at Attack Advertising (Oxford University Press, 2019). Kenney has also authored and coauthored articles in several journals, including the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Politics.

Kenney joined Arizona State University in 1986 after receiving his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from the University of Iowa. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation.
