This piece includes data from two Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) surveys, one based on a household survey that measures total job growth for California, and one based on a survey of non-farm establishments, which omits the self-employed and some other categories of employment, and which was mistakenly used to measure total national job growth. While the household survey data can be used to correct this error, the author’s post-publication opinion is that the household survey data are almost certainly understating job growth, both nationally and in California. The piece is therefore retracted, given the author’s opinion about the reliability of the household survey and the error noted above, and to avoid any misinformation that can be attributed to the article.
