The disastrous Russian invasion of Ukraine will have major consequences for Putin’s allies across the world. Syria’s dictator Bashar al-Assad will be among the first to experience the negative fallout from Russia’s strategic blunder, as his regime’s reckoning may finally be approaching. Several former senior officers from Syria’s main intelligence and security agencies are facing trial, with some already found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity across Europe.
Joel Rayburn is a retired military officer, former diplomat, and historian. From 2017 to 2021, he held senior positions in Middle East policy in the White House and the State Department. In 2021 he served as an advisor to Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN). Among his books on Iraq is the US Army's 2019 two-volume history of the Iraq War.
Nawaf Obaid is a senior fellow in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, and a commissioner at the Commission for International Justice and Accountability. He has held several foreign policy advisory positions within the Saudi government and fellowships at Harvard, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
