Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA) — The Hoover Institution’s Economic Policy Working Group is proud to present Capitalism and Freedom in the Twenty-First Century, a podcast dedicated to examining modern economic issues.

Hosted by Hoover research associate Jon Hartley, Capitalism and Freedom in the Twenty-First Century interviews economists and discusses their thinking concerning a host of economic topics. The podcast is titled after Milton Friedman‘s famous 1962 bestselling book Capitalism and Freedom, which after 60 years remains prescient due to its focus on policy issues which are now at the forefront of economic debates, such as monetary policy and inflation, fiscal policy, occupational licensing, education vouchers, income share agreements, the distribution of income, and negative income taxes.

The episodes often touch on the guests’ contributions to academic research and policy as well as the people and ideas who have influenced their thinking.

New episodes will reflect the research portfolio of the Hoover’s Economic Policy Working Group, which is chaired by senior fellows John B. Taylor and John H. Cochrane.

The inaugural episode on July 16 featured Cochrane in conversation with Hartley discussing various pressing topics including the appropriate role of government in promoting growth and stability in today’s economy, the usefulness of macroeconomic models, and the fiscal theory of the price level.

The latest episode, released on August 1, featured MIT professor of economics Daron Acemoglu, who talked with Hartley about what types of institutions help foster economic growth and the levels of regulation that can become an obstacle to prosperity.

The series will feature interviews with a range of prominent economists over the next two months, including Harvard economist Gregory Mankiw in an episode expected to be released on August 15 and banker, economist, and carbon tax advocate Bob Litterman in an episode expected to be released on August 29.

This coming academic year will feature episodes involving Hoover Institution senior fellow and research director Steven Davis on September 1 and former vice chair of the Federal Reserve Richard Clarida on September 26.

Since 2020, Hartley has interviewed experts on the show including Glenn Hubbard, former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers; former secretary of the Treasury Larry Summers; DJ Nordquist, former executive director of the World Bank; and Doug Ducey, former governor of Arizona.

The existing slate of episodes includes those with Hoover fellows including John B. Taylor, Joshua D. Rauh, Michael Bordo, Kevin Hassett, Casey Mulligan, and Jay Bhattacharya.

Hartley is completing a PhD in economics at Stanford University. In addition to his activities with Hoover, Hartley is a research fellow at the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity and a senior fellow at Canada’s Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
