Lieutenant Colonel Arun Shankar, representing the U.S. Marine Corps, is a National Security Affairs Fellow for the academic year 2022–23 at the Hoover Institution.

Shankar served in a variety of command and support roles throughout his 20-year career as a Communications Officer. As a lieutenant, he served as the S-6A for 3d Marine Regiment.

As a captain, he spent 28 months in OIF & OEF across various billets. Additionally, he obtained a Masters in Applied Math and a Masters in Operations Research from Naval Postgraduate School.

As a major, he served in 3 years of company command across 1st Marine Logistics Group and 1st Marine Division. He also attended the School of Advanced Warfighting and served as an instructor at the MAGTF Staff Training Program.

As a lieutenant colonel, Shankar served as the AC/S G-6 of 1st Marine Division and the Commanding Officer of Communication Training Battalion.

Lieutenant Colonel Shankar holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from George Mason University.

Lieutenant Colonel Shankar’s research at Hoover will focus on optimizing the delegation of military authorities for offensive cyber operations.
